Mark Melloan
Elizabethtown singer-songwriter Mark Melloan makes the trip up
Interstate 65 this Saturday to open for local wonderboys The Muckrakers
— “the greatest bar band ever,” is what local
musician John Shiner calls them — at Gerstle’s Place,
3801 Frankfort Ave. In contrast to the upbeat and sometimes silly
Muck Show, Melloan writes somber folk songs that hearken to Civil
War-era days gone by. On Melloan’s album, The Shadowlands,
he explores emotion, people, history, progress, co-dependency
and more — and much of it is Kentucky-specific. Melloan’s
childhood was filled with music; during the 1970s, his parents
traveled across the Bluegrass playing in a gospel band (Mom played
a Wurlitzer piano, Dad strummed a Gibson SG). The Shadowlands
features stories of folks like those his parents probably met
during their travels (and none other than Bela Fleck contributed
banjo to the disc just to sweeten the deal). Call Gerstle’s
at 899-3609 for more info about the show, or visit
www.markmelloan.com
to get Melloan’s CD or more info on him. —Kevin Gibson
